American Snus

The machines needed to produce snus were even more expensive to bring in so they improvised. Instead of steam curing the tobacco like it was in Swedish snus, they fire cured it and rather than grinding the tobacco prior to curing it, they shredded the tobacco after it was aged. While this form of Americanized snus was made in small batches for the use of the workers in the tobacco farms, it wasn’t until 1822 that a truly American version was created by a tobacconist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by the name of George Weyman.
